  • Planting is a very important role in how a landscape will perform. When it comes to proper planting technique, it is much more in depth than simply digging a hole, putting the plant in and covering it up. Proper planting is a very crucial step in helping promote the best overall health for the plant material. When planting, a few things to consider is the location, soil quality, planting depth, proper spacing, and most importantly watering.
  • The location of where the plant material will be installed is extremely important. Location tells us what type plants will thrive and what plants will not. There are certain plants that do better in shade and certain plants that do better in sun. It is important to know which plants are best suited for the area in which you will be planting.
  • Soil quality is also extremely important to plant health. We always take into account soil conditions and plan for soil amendments to help strengthen soil quality when planting. Even the healthiest of plants won't live long in poor soil. It is important to know the quality of soil you are working with and what you need to do in order to strengthen the quality of that soil.
  • Another important factor most folks overlook is proper planting depth. Certain plants to better at certain planted depths. It is important to know what plant needs to be planted at what depth. A shallow soil plant that is planted to deep will never reach its potential and can slowly die due to this. Proper planting depth is crucial to plants, trees and shrubs as they all need to have the proper amount of soil at install.
  • Proper spacing is often times overlooked because folks want instant gratification. We plan for the future and the growth of the plant material and allow those plants to grow into the provided space for not only health reasons but esthetics. When folks plant multiple trees or shrubs too close together they tend to grow into each other over time resulting in removal because they are too big for the space and they are fighting for nutrients, sun light, water, etc.
and the overall health declines quickly. We plan our planting installs with more mature plants to help provide the instant gratification effect without overcrowding. This allows the plant room to grow and fill into the space in which they were designed.
  • The most important thing to remember when planting, the job isn’t finished when the dirt has been raked back over the plant. Water is crucial to the health and establishment of the plant material. Proper watering is what helps the plant to not become stressed during the establishment period. How long does it take for a plant to become established? The term “established” refers to the point at which a newly planted tree, shrub, accent, or ground cover begins to produce new growth. New growth appears as fresh foliage or new stems. Typically, the root system of a shrub will be well established after one year. A tree will be well established after three years (depending on size). It is very important to keep newly planted trees, shrubs or plant properly watered.
